Transforming A Blank Wall

I had a dilemma: How do you decorate a blank wall on a three-season porch? I wanted some artwork out there, but it had to withstand the heat and humidity of a Minnesota summer and the freezing cold temps of winter. I didn’t think paper could handle the elements. However, I got inspired by Instagram posts and magazine layouts featuring woven bowls.

The bowls add a lot of color and texture to the porch.

We had several bowls that were gifted to us over the years. One was from South Africa and two were from Mexico. They were beautifully crafted and each told a story. But they were packed away and weren’t being enjoyed. So I dug them out and laid them on the floor to plan a good arrangement. Mounting them was easy! Using a nail with a small head, I simply hammered in between the center weave of each bowl.

There’s a lot of room to add to the collection.

We’ve since bought two more bowls on our honeymoon to add to the growing collection. I like the various sizes and colors. I also think it’s more visually interesting if some touch or overlap each other.

Now, each time we travel, we can search for a bowl to add to the display. Every added bowl will create more memories and give some extra warmth to the space.

Why stop at bowls? Maybe it’s vintage signs, plates, quilts, or even framed scraps of fabric. Many accent or functional pieces can easily be displayed on a wall.

It’s important to remember that art can come in many forms, and sometimes you need to think outside the box when decorating a space – especially a space with some challenges. Mounting the bowls on the wall became the perfect way to display them and transform a blank space exposed to a bit of Mother Nature.
